Who is my academic advisor?
Linda Safer is the dedicated academic advisor for all SSHA transfer students, regardless of major, and will be your primary point of contact. During busy times, you may also connect with another academic advisor or a peer navigator to ensure timely support.
Does my GPA transfer from my previous institution to UC Merced?
Non-UC courses to not apply to your UC Merced GPA. Your GPA will be established after your first semester once your final grades are posted.
Do I need to take Placement Exams?
Junior-level transfer students generally do not need to take the placement exams. If you choose to take the exam, there is no penalty but your transfer coursework already provides the placement information required.
What classes should I take in my first semester?
Your academic advisor, Linda Safer, will contact you via your UC Merced email with personalized course recommendations. These recommendations are based on your intended major and the courses offered in your first semester.
→ Tip: Be sure to check your UC Merced email regularly so you don’t miss important updates.
Where do I send my transcripts and/or my IGETC certification?
All official transcripts and IGETC certifications should be sent directly to UC Merced’s Office of the Registrar.
→ Next Step: Visit the Office of Admissions website for submission instructions and deadlines.
How do I see what courses are required for my major?
There are two ways to view your major requirements:
- Review the Course Catalog: Make sure you are viewing the correct catalog year (listed at the top). Your catalog year is based on your first semester at UC Merced.
- Run a MyDegreePath Audit: Log into your student portal and run an audit to see your degree requirements and progress.

Can I change my major, add a double major, or declare a minor?
Yes! As a transfer student, you can request these changes after completing your first semester at UC Merced, once you have an established GPA.
→ Next step: Meet with your academic advisor to review eligibility and receive the necessary forms.
Is Orientation required?
While not required, orientation is highly encouraged and designed to set you up for success. You’ll meet other transfer students, learn about campus resources, and have the opportunity to finalize your class schedule. Orientation is a great way to start building your UC Merced community.
